Elderly massage is a brilliant way to reconnect to someone who is older, and may not necessarily receive the benefits of the power of touch. Massage for elderly people is a unique way to help reduce feelings of isolation, whilst helping to address aches, pains, stiffness and flexibility.
A regular hand massage to an older person, will not only help with the physical side of ailments, addressing stiffness in the hands and working to get the fingers moving easier and with less pain. A healing therapeutic touch will also begin to release wonderful feel good hormones, like oxytocin, endorphins and serotonin. This brilliant concoction of natural pain killers and smile hormones, help to raise feelings of wellbeing and create better bonds.
We were recently at a nursing home in Leeds and were invited to teach members of staff how to give elderly massage. We have found that those who are older respond very well to professional hand massages, particularly as there is no disrobing.
Staff were extremely surprised at how relaxed and “chilled out” they felt whilst they were not only receiving their hand massage but also when they were giving a hand massage and were outwardly impressed with its’ power.
Managing Director, Lubna Latif, also a trained Holistic Therapist of over 10 years, encouraged staff to begin to look at the hand from a new perspective, giving minute attention to all the different aspects of the hand.
Staff at the home, learnt many new massage techniques to apply to the hand and were bowled over with all the different things that they could do to help improve the quality of life for their residents.
We are looking forward to hearing some positive stories from the care home and are sure that residents will love their treatments.
